３. 米国北太平洋探検隊採集の日本植物の図録

以下に掲げる111枚の写真は，黒船によって採集された日本植物の標本で，その大部分は米国ニューヨーク植物園所蔵の，標本によっている．黒船の植物標本は，その主たるセットはハーバード大学植物標本館にあり，副標本はニューヨーク植物園，米国国立自然史博物館(スミソニアン研究所)のほか，例えばスゲ属の研究が行われた英国王立キュー植物園，海藻の研究が行われたアイルランドのダブリン大学の植物学科等にも少なくとも一部が保存されている．その中で，ニューヨーク植物園のセットはほぼ完全セットであるのみならず，保存状態が非常に良く，標本によってはマスター・セットより良好なものも見られる．ニューヨーク植物園にかかるセットがもたらされた背景には，黒船の植物を研究したグレイ教授のかつての上司であったジョン・トーレイ(John Torrey)博士が，その当時コロンビア大学およびニューヨーク植物園の植物学者であった事によると思われる．今回はこのニューヨーク植物園のセットを中心に現在の分類学の進歩に合わせて正しく同定したので，その結果も以下に解説する．

現在普通に使われている日本名を附し，学名は正名としたものを太字体とし，グレイによる学名はそれと異なる場合のみ，斜体で異名として併記した．このほかに，採集地，分布，簡単な記載と，興味があると思われるノートを附記してご参考に供する事にした．

While the master set of the plant specimens collected in Japan by the U. S. North Pacific Exploring Expeditions is kept in the Harvard University Herbaria, duplicate sets are found elsewhere, e.g., in the herbaria of The New York Botanical Garden, Smithsonian Institution, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the School of Botany of the Trinity College at Dublin, etc. Among those duplicate sets, the set available at The New York Botanical Garden is the best in both quality of specimens and completeness of the collections, perhaps because Asa Gray had sent better portions of the collections to John Torrey at New York, who was the respected senior to him during his New York time. Concerning the type specimens, those at the Harvard should be regarded as the holotypes for obvious reasons, but in some instances holotypes are found belonging to other herbaria. For instance, as to the Carex (Cyperaceae) the Kew sheets should be designated for holotypes, because the new species of Carex out of the collections were described by F. Boott at Kew. As to whether or not the Dublin sheets of algae be regarded to be the holotypes further studies of the Dublin specimens are needed. In the present catalogue scientific names have been chosen following those adopted in contemporary flora books of Japan. Most photographs of specimens published here rest on the New York specimens. Our sincere appreciations are due to the staff members of the herbarium of The New York Botanical Garden and of the Harvard University Herbaria for the loans of these invaluable, historical specimens for our studies.
