32　ツワブキ(キク科) Farfugium japonicum (L. f.) Kitamura

［採集地］九州，鹿児島県，種子島．

海岸の近くに生える大形の多年草で，太い地下茎がある．葉は根生し，長い柄があり，葉身は腎形，厚く，上面は濃い緑色で光沢がある．冬に高さ50～70cmの花茎を出し，頂に数房状になる枝を分って，径5～6mmの頭状花序を多数つける．舌状花の長さは3～4cm，濃い黄色である．

庭園に観賞用として植え，全体大形のオオツワブキ等の品種がある．また，葉柄はフキの葉柄と同じく，皮を去って食用とする．生葉の絞り汁や葉の煎汁は夏の中毒に効くという．

This evergreen herb is often cultivated in Japanese gardens, and several cultivars are available. The petioles of this species, like those of Petasites japonica, are eaten braised with their skin removed. In Japanese folk medicine the fresh juice and the decoction of leaves are internally taken for the remedy of toxication by fish as well as externally applied to skin eczema.

33　マサキ(ニシキギ科) Euonymus japonicus Thunberg

主として近海地の林の中に生える常緑樹で，高さは3～5m，円く緑色の枝がある．葉は楕円形から倒卵円形，やや厚目で光沢があり，長さは3～8cm，基部に長さ1cm内外の柄がある．6～7月に葉腋に集散花序を出し，淡緑色の花をまばらに着ける．花は四数花で，径約7mm，萼片4枚，花弁4枚，雄しべ4本と雌しべ1本がある．果実は径7mmの球形，裂開して橙赤色の種子を出す．

低木でかなり根元から枝分かれし，葉が比較的密生して美しいので生垣用に植えられる．

［分布］温帯・暖帯：北海道(南部)，本州，四国，九州，小笠原，琉球，中国，朝鮮．

This is a low tree, which is well branched from just above the base, rather densely bearing pretty leaves, hence it is one of the preferred hedge trees in Japan.

暖地の海岸林に生える高さ1.5～5mの常緑低木．樹皮は淡灰褐色で小さい皺が多い．葉は互生し，長倒卵形，質は厚し，長さ2～4cm，縁に鈍鋸歯がある．雌雄異株で，花は葉腋に1～3個ずつ着生し，10～12月に開花する．雄花は直径6mm，花弁5枚，雄しべは13～16本．雌花は径2mm位，秋に径5mm位の液果を生ずる．

神事に使うヒサカキは本種と同属の一種で、内陸の暖帯村内に生え、葉が楕円形なので区別できる。

［分布］暖帯・亜熱帯：本州(千葉県以西)，四国，九州，琉球，朝鮮半島南部，中国中南部．

Hisakaki or Eurya japonica, which is one of the sacred plants of Japanese shinto occasions, differs from this by its elliptic leaves versus lance-obovate ones in this species. Also, while E. emarginata grows in the coastal forests, E. japonica occurs in the inland evergreen woods.

35　ヘビイチゴ(バラ科) Duchesnea indica (Andr.) Focke

［採集地］鹿児島県，徳之島．

路傍や丘陵地の草むらにやや普通の多年草．イチゴのように長い匍枝を出して殖える．根生葉には長い柄があり，卵形の小葉のある三出複葉，全体に白い毛を布く．基部に卵円形の托葉がある．春から初夏に，地上匐枝の葉腋から長さ4～7cmの花柄を出して，径15mm位の黄色の花を開く．花弁は5枚．果実は径1cm弱の赤色で海綿状の花柄があり，小さい瘦果が多数つく．

花弁が黄色である点で，イチゴやイチゴ属のナワシロイチゴと異なる．

［分布］温帯から熱帯：日本全土から中国，インドシナ，フィリピン，ジャワ．

［Locality］Is. Tokunoshima in Kagoshima Pref.

［Distrib.］Rather widely distributed in the temparate, subtropical and tropical regions of Asia, from Japan and China south to Indo-China and southeastwards to the Philippines and Indonesian Java.

The Japanese name of this wild herb is ‟snake strawberry,” which differs from true strawberry and its relatives of the genus Fragaria in its yellow flowers in contrast to the white ones of the latter.
